Regis Philbin Inspired by
Wounded Service Members' Spirit
Regis Philbin of the "Live with Regis and Kelly" television talk show listens June 22 to Army Staff Sgt. Gary M. Jackson, 35, tell him what doctors at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington are doing to fix wounds he received in Iraq while serving with the 16th Military Police Brigade (Airborne). AFPS photo by Rudi Williams      WASHINGTON, June 23, 2004 — It seemed like old home week when television star Regis Philbin walked into the Walter Reed Army Medical Center hospital room of Army Spc. Danielle Green. They'd shot a few hoops together four years ago when Green was a basketball star at Philbin's alma mater, the University of Notre Dame.
Green can't shoot hoops any more – at least not with the left hand she used to score more than 1,100 points during her Notre Dame career. She lost her hand May 25 when she was hit by an enemy rocket in Iraq. Story

Deputy Defense Secretary
Paul Wolfowitz
(In Iraq) "we met a young Marine whose life was saved by five Iraqi civil defense corps members who rushed to rescue him when he was wounded. We met the head of the new Iraqi intelligence service, who lost three sons who were executed by Saddam. We met the prime minister, who was nearly axed to death in London by Saddam's killers. We met the president, whose predecessor was blown up in a car bomb two months ago. We met the deputy prime minister, who was nearly assassinated by killers up in northern Iraq. ...

"And the most moving thing of all -- this really beautiful young Kurdish woman who was our interpreter up in Mosul, ... turns out, her sister was assassinated because she was working for us. And we asked her, 'Why do you still work -- why do you continue?' And she said, "Because my father said you mustn't retreat in the face of evil."

"It is impressive, ... how many Iraqis are standing up in the face of evil. And that's why we're going to win."
