Wolfowitz Arrives in Baghdad
To Meet Troops, Iraqi Leaders

     BAGHDAD, Iraq, June 16, 2004 — Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz arrived here in the Iraqi capital before dawn this morning to visit with troops and with Iraqi and coalition leaders. A senior defense official speaking on background said this trip is one of a series of periodic visits "to get a first-hand appreciation of the situation on the ground and to better understand the things that our troops need … to help support them."
     An important topic of discussions with coalition and Iraqi leaders will be efforts and funding to train and equip Iraqi defense forces.  More

     WASHINGTON, June 16, 2004 — While most Americans focus on the Middle East as the bull's-eye of terrorist activity in the world, Africa continues to fester as a breeding ground for al Qaeda and other terrorist organizations, the deputy commander of U.S. European Command told civilians attending the Joint Civilian Orientation Conference last week.
     Air Force Gen. Charles F. Wald said terrorists being driven from Afghanistan and elsewhere in Southwest Asia are finding safe haven to the south. There, operating in vast, open spaces with long, porous borders, these groups are able to recruit and train members and bankroll their operations, he said.  More
President Reaffirms 'Ironclad Commitment' to Afghanistan

     WASHINGTON, June 15, 2004 — Following meetings with Afghan President Hamid Karzai, President Bush reaffirmed the United States' "ironclad commitment" to aid Afghanistan.
     Bush and Karzai spoke to reporters at the White House Rose Garden today.

Iraqi Military Buys Two Aircraft;

     WASHINGTON, June 15, 2004 — The Iraqi military soon will be cleared for flight after the purchase this week of two aircraft in Jordan, coalition officials in Baghdad said today.
     Army Brig. Gen. Mark Kimmitt, deputy operations director of Multinational Force Iraq, told reporters today the aircraft are part of a plan to provide surveillance capability to the growing Iraqi security forces. Story

Coalition Officials Expect More
Violence as Handover Nears

     WASHINGTON, June 15, 2004 — Coalition officials expect more violence leading up to and after the June 30 handover of authority in Iraq, officials in Baghdad said today.
     Army Brig. Gen. Mark Kimmitt, deputy operations director for Multinational Force Iraq, said "mixed intelligence" reports regarding post-June 30 Iraq suggests there will be continued violence, "with that violence directed at trying to demonstrate that the new government is shaky, wobbly and won't hang in there."
     In the meantime, he said, the coalition forces will continue military operations, and "continue to assess that intelligence (and) continue to stand ready for that additional violence along with our Iraqi security partners.  More  Briefing

     Col. John R. Toolan, commander for Regimental Combat Team 1, awarded two Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals and three Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals to the Iraqi soldiers. The soldiers were cited for braving enemy fire to aid Marines in a May 30 clash. The awards included "V" devices for valor.  More

DoD Identifies Army Casualty
     WASHINGTON, June 15, 2004 — The Department of Defense announced today the death of a soldier who was supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom.
     Pfc. Shawn M. Atkins, 20, of Parker, Colo., died June 14 in Baghdad, Iraq, as a result of a non-combat injury. Atkins was assigned to Headquarters, Headquarters Company, 4th Aviation Brigade, 1st Armored Division, Hanau, Germany.
     The incident is under investigation.
