Karzai Urges Lawmakers to
Stay the Course in Terror War

     WASHINGTON, June 15, 2004 — Afghan President Hamid Karzai thanked America today for its resources, leadership and especially "the precious lives of your soldiers" in the effort to free his country.
     Karzai spoke before a joint session of Congress. He listed the progress his country has made since being freed from the Taliban yoke in 2001 and the challenges that remain.
     He urged lawmakers to stay the course in the global war on terror, saying the effort is worth the price. More
As Sovereignty Nears, Iraqis Control 15 of 26 Ministries

     WASHINGTON, June 15, 2004 — With just over two weeks remaining before the formal handover of sovereignty on June 30, the transition of authority to Iraq's new government is more than half complete, Coalitional Provisional Authority officials said in Baghdad today.
     Senior CPA spokesman Dan Senor told reporters that nearly 60 percent of the Iraqi government already has been turned over to Iraqi control.
     Thus far, 15 of Iraq's 26 newly established ministries are under Iraqi control, he said. The other 11 ministries will be turned over within the next two weeks, he added. More

     WASHINGTON, June 14, 2004 — Citing recent and upcoming events, Vice President Dick Cheney told a group in Florida today that the United States has made tremendous progress in Afghanistan and Iraq.
      Cheney spoke at the James Madison Institute, a Florida-based research and educational organization.
     "Who could have conceived that we would see the president of Afghanistan addressing a joint session of Congress, as Hamid Karzai will (June 15), to express his gratitude to the American people for the liberation of his nation?" he asked. "Who could have imagined that we would see an Iraqi president come to our country and thank us, as President Ghazi al-Yawer did last week, for liberating his country?" More

Army Provincial Reconstruction Team Supports Marines' Afghan Operations
     FORWARD OPERATING BASE RIPLEY, Afghanistan, June 15, 2004 — A village elder watches as a convoy filled with Marines and soldiers pulls up a short distance from his village. He remembers the days of the Soviets and the Taliban, and wonders what the armored warriors want with his village.
     The elder speaks with the one of the soldiers as he is peppered with questions about the health of his people. As per Afghan custom, tea is served for host and guests, an expression of Afghan hospitality. They discuss drinking water and the condition of the village's livestock. Soon, a truck filled with grain, school supplies and tools pulls up to deliver them to the village. Story
