Catch Baghdad Car Bombers

     WASHINGTON, June 14, 2004 — Iraq's prime minister pledged to apprehend those responsible for today's deadly Baghdad car bombing, the latest in a recent spike of terrorist violence against the interim government slated to take power June 30.
     "It is an unfortunate and cowardly event," Prime Minister Ayad Allawi told reporters today in Baghdad after meeting with top Iraqi security officials. Allawi was referring to a Baghdad car bomb attack that targeted a convoy of SUVs carrying a group of coalition infrastructure repair specialists.
     Allawi said five non-Iraqi civilians in the convoy were killed and three were injured in the attack. More
Afghan, Iraq Presidents Call For Coalition Forces to Stay

     WASHINGTON, June 13, 2004 — The presidents of Afghanistan and Iraq both called for coalition forces to stay in their countries during separate interviews on NBC's "Meet the Press" today.
     Afghan President Hamid Kharzai and Iraqi President Ghazi al-Yawar both said the short-term stability of their countries depends on the U.S.-led coalition staying in their respective lands.
     Yawar said Iraqi security forces cannot handle the security problems today. More

     ROTA, Spain, June 13, 2004 — Civilian leaders visiting here from throughout the United States looked on June 12 as Marines charged with providing anti- terrorism and force protection throughout Europe demonstrated how they use non-lethal weapons in their mission.
     The leaders from business, academia and local government, all participants in the 2004 Joint Civilian Orientation Conference, got a firsthand look at tactics used by Marine Corps Security Force Company Europe. The unit deploys throughout Europe, Eurasia and Africa to provide extra protection to military installations and ships during high-threat periods.   More

Soldiers Find Artillery Cache
     TIKRIT, Iraq, June 14, 2004 — First Infantry Division soldiers from 1st Battalion, 7th Field Artillery Regiment found a cache of 264 artillery shells near Bayji, June 13, according to Multinational Force Iraq officials.
     The patrol was investigating a suspected mortar attack when they discovered the cache. The shells were destroyed in place.
