Terror War Being Fought on
Many Fronts, President Says
By Army Sgt. 1st Class Doug Sample / American Force Press Service
WASHINGTON, June 5, 2004 — The challenges of the United States and coalition nations in the war on terrorism extend beyond Iraq, President Bush said today in his national weekly radio address.
"The war on terror is being fought on many fronts," he reminded listeners.
Bush noted that since Sept. 11, 2001, terrorists have struck in places from Morocco to Indonesia, but the center of terrorist conflict remains the Middle East. "If that region is abandoned to dictators and terrorists, it will be a constant source of violence and alarm, exporting killers of increasing sophistication and destructive power," the president pointed out. Extremism Threatens Prosperity, Clouds Civil Society's Future

By John D. Banusiewicz / American Forces Press Service
SINGAPORE, June 5, 2004 — Ideological extremism that uses terror as a weapon stands in the way of global political progress and economic prosperity, threatens international order and clouds civil society's future, Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld said here today.
Rumsfeld was this morning's keynote speaker at the International Institute for Strategic Studies' annual Pacific security conference, known as the "Shangri-la Dialog."
Because extremists who use terror as a weapon can't be appeased, the secretary said, they must be confronted on many fronts by all civil societies. His remarks centered on what he called "the way ahead in the global struggle of civilization vs. extremism." More

United States to Maintain its Capability in the Pacific Region

By John D. Banusiewicz / American Forces Press Service
SINGAPORE, June 5, 2004 — The United States will maintain its capability in the Pacific region, Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld said here today, and Australia's defense minister said his country is satisfied with letting the United States decide how to do that.
The two defense leaders met with reporters after their bilateral meeting. Both are here for the annual Pacific security conference known as the "Shangri-la Dialog," sponsored by the International Institute for Strategic Studies.
Rumsfeld said the guiding principles behind the pursuit of changes in how the United States positions its forces globally are basing its troops only where they're wanted and shifting from a static, mass-defense posture to a more agile and capable one built for 21st century threats. More

Myers: Today’s Terror Threat
As Dangerous as World War II’s

By Jim Garamone / American Forces Press Service
SAINTE MERE EGLISE, France, June 5, 2004 — The world is facing as much of a threat today from terrorists and extremists as it did during World War II, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff said today at a memorial tribute to airborne veterans of the Normandy invasion.
Air Force Gen. Richard B. Myers compared the world of 1944 to today. “We can scarcely imagine how history would have unfolded had the Allied effort (in World War II) failed,” he said. “The world must work together now to defeat a threat as great as that of the war. Extremists want to replace the freedoms the Allies defended so bravely with fear: the kind of fear that crushes the human spirit and destroys all confidence, creativity and courage,” Myers said. More
