U.S. General Tasked to Review Detention, Holding Operations

     KABUL, Afghanistan, May 22, 2004 — Lt. Gen. David Barno, Combined Forces Command-Afghanistan commander, has appointed Brig. Gen. Charles H. Jacoby, Jr., Deputy Commanding General, Combined Joint Task Force-76, to lead the “top to bottom” review of all coalition detention and holding operations in Afghanistan, according to Combined Forces Command Afghanistan officials.
     Jacoby, a highly decorated West Point graduate, has been in theater since April 2004, and has a wide range of command experience spanning almost 26 years. More
Spokesman: No Wedding Party Found at Desert Attack Site

     WASHINGTON, May 22, 2004 — There are no indications a wedding party took place at a remote desert site in western Iraq near the Syrian border where U.S. forces are accused of killing about 20 people May 19, including women and children, a senior military spokesman said today.

     FORT GEORGE G. MEADE, Md., May 21, 2004 — Using words and pictures to tell the truths of war, even the difficult ones, is essential work both inside and outside the military, CBS News anchor Dan Rather said at the Defense Information School.
      Rather was keynote speaker at a ceremony honoring the military services' top visual information specialists and print and broadcast journalists for 2003. DINFOS, as the school is known, is the U.S. military's training institution for those specialties.

     WASHINGTON, May 21, 2004 — Coalition forces captured four individuals suspected of involvement in the murder of American contractor Nicholas Berg during a May 19 raid in Baghdad, a senior U.S. military spokesman noted today.

     BAGHDAD, Iraq, May 23, 2004 — Informants turned in 100 cases of anti-aircraft rounds and numerous other assorted munitions to coalition forces on May 23, according to Multi-National Corps-Iraq/Multi-National Force-Iraq officials.
      The other munitions included over 139 rocket fuses, 61 anti-tank mines, 50 hand grenades, 31 sticks of explosives, 26 recoilless rifle rounds, six rocket-propelled grenades, five RPG launchers, five rifle grenades, four mortars, four rockets, and one .50 caliber machinegun.

     WASHINGTON, May 23, 2004 — Defense Department officials announced today the death of a soldier who was supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom.
     Staff Sgt. Jeremy R. Horton, 24, of Carneys Point, Penn., died May 21, 2004 in near Al Iskandariyah, Iraq when an improvised explosive device exploded. Horton was assigned to Company B, 2nd Battalion, 6th Infantry Regiment, 1st Armored Division, Baumholder, Germany.
