Chairman Details Challenges, Risks Ahead in War on Terror

     WASHINGTON, May 21, 2004 — "I'm of the school that the more the Iraqis can do, the better," said Air Force Gen. Richard B. Myers to the House Armed Services Committee today. "And the faster we can get them to do that, the better as well."
     The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff said that all in the Defense Department are in agreement that the coalition needs to turn Iraq over to Iraqis. But, he cautioned, "there's always risk in that." More

     WASHINGTON, May 20, 2004 — Insurgents using a smuggling route for foreign fighters and weaponry entering Iraq were the targets of a May 19 strike near the Iraq-Syrian border, a senior military spokesman said at a Baghdad news conference today.

Humane Treatment of Detainees

     WASHINGTON, May 20, 2004 — The U.S. general in command of operations in Iraq repeatedly ordered humane treatment of detainees, he told senators here May 19.
     At least three times, in September and October 2003 and in May 2004, Army Lt. Gen. Ricardo S. Sanchez "issued interrogation policies that reiterated the application of the Geneva Conventions and required that all interrogations be conducted in the lawful and humane manner with command oversight," Sanchez said on Capitol Hill.  More
Red Cross Reports Now to Go Through Single Point of Contact

     WASHINGTON, May 20, 2004 — All reports from the International Committee of the Red Cross on detainee operations by the U.S. military in Iraq will now go through a single senior point of contact.
     Army Maj. Gen. Geoffery Miller, deputy commander for detainee operations for Multinational Force Iraq, told members of the Senate Armed Services Committee he would be that person. He will bring them to the attention of senior commanders. More

Muqtada Al-Sadr Militia Attack
Damages Iraqi Mosque
     AN NAJAF, Iraq, May 21, 20004 — Muqtada Al-Sadr militia damaged a mosque during repeated mortar, rocket-propelled grenade and small arms attacks on a coalition patrol here around 11:30 p.m. May 20, coalition officials announced today.
     An enemy mortar round struck the mosque, starting a fire. Two armed Muqtada militia were killed by coalition soldiers as they fled the mosque, officials said. There were no reports of coalition casualties.

DoD Identifies Marine Casualty
     WASHINGTON, May 21, 2004 — The Department of Defense announced today the death a Marine who was supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom.
     Pfc. Michael M. Carey, 20, of Prince George, Va., died May 18 in Iraq. He apparently fell into a canal and did not resurface. His remains were recovered May 18. He was assigned to 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, 1st Marine Expeditionary Force, based at Camp Pendleton, Calif.

A Marine stacks some of the munitions uncovered in what is believed to be the largest cache of weapons found by Marines in the Al Anbar Province this year, hidden mostly in buried plastic barrels. Bill Lisbon     CAMP TAQADDUM, Iraq, May 21, 2004 — In the past week, Marines based here have unearthed some of the largest stockpiles of weapons found this year, which, left unfound, could have outfitted insurgents with the materials needed to construct improvised explosives and attack U.S. forces.
     Discovered in various locations east of the camp by Weapons Company, 3rd Battalion, 24th Marine Regiment, more than 1,000 mortars, artillery shells and rockets — not to mention a cornucopia of other weapons — have been either captured or destroyed. More
