War on Terror 'Mission of a Generation,' Rumsfeld Says

     WASHINGTON, May 17, 2004 — The war on terror will be the mission of a generation, Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld told the Heritage Foundation here today. Rumsfeld said Americans cannot expect the war on terror to be easy or short.
     The secretary said that since Sept. 11, 2001, Americans have known they have a mission to perform. "The global war on terror, like the Cold War before it, will be the work of a generation," Rumsfeld said. "Terrorists will strike at will." More

     WASHINGTON, May 17, 2004 — About 3,600 members of the 2nd Brigade of the 2nd Infantry Division will deploy to Iraq from the Republic of Korea, Defense Department officials confirmed today.
     The troops will begin deploying to Iraq in mid-summer, a senior official said speaking on background.
     The decision can be made with impunity, because of the beefed-up capabilities the United States has on the Korean peninsula, the official said. More
Roadside Bomb Releases Small Traces of Sarin Gas in Baghdad

     WASHINGTON, May 17, 2004 — A roadside bomb containing the nerve agent sarin – a substance Saddam Hussein's regime insisted it had destroyed more than a decade ago – exploded near a U.S. military convoy traveling near Baghdad, coalition officials said today.
     Army Brig. Gen. Mark Kimmitt, deputy operations director for Multinational Force Iraq, told reporters in Baghdad a U.S. convoy found the 155-millimeter artillery round rigged as an improvised explosive device. The round detonated before the explosive ordnance team could render it inert. More

     WASHINGTON, May 17, 2004 — A suicide car bomb claimed the lives of the Iraqi Governing Council president and at least four other Iraqis outside the Coalition Provisional headquarters in Baghdad, Iraq, today.
     Ezzidin Salim is the highest-ranking Iraqi official to be assassinated since the country's liberation. Eight people – six Iraqis and two U.S. soldiers – were wounded in the attack. More

     WASHINGTON, May 18, 2004 — Buckle up your seat belt and don't drive too fast. This age-old advice applies as much on the streets of Baghdad as on Main Street USA.
     Vehicle accidents - involving both tactical and nontactical vehicles - are the leading cause of noncombat fatalities in Iraq. According to J.T. Coleman from the Army Safety Center at Fort Rucker, Ala., most result from excessive speed and not wearing seat belts.  More
Iraqi Delivers Explosives
To Coalition Forces 
     BAGHDAD, Iraq, May 17, 2004 — An unidentified Iraqi dropped the largest single cache, to date, of mortar rounds and triggering devices to a Task Force Baghdad base camp shortly after midnight this morning.
     Coalition officials said an explosive ordnance disposal unit was called in after the drop and discovered that the cache contained 101, 82-millimeter mortar rounds, 99 triggering devices and a blasting cap.

     NEW BOSTON AIR FORCE STATION, N.H. , May 18, 2004 — A little-known Air Force station in New Hampshire was the focal point for hundreds of emergency workers May 15 as they responded to a simulated terrorist attack involving a weapon of mass destruction.
