Rumsfeld in Baghdad to Visit Troops, Meet with Leaders

     BAGHDAD, Iraq, May 13, 2004 — Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld arrived in Baghdad today for a surprise visit to U.S. troops and to meet with military and Coalition Provisional Authority officials.
     Rumsfeld, accompanied by Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Richard B. Myers, arrived in Iraq at about 12:30 p.m. local time. He immediately met with Lt. Gen. Ricardo S. Sanchez, commander of Combined Joint Task Force 7, and Ambassador L. Paul Bremer III, the U.S. civil administer in Iraq. More

     WASHINGTON, May 12, 2004 — Revelations of alleged abuses committed against detainees by U.S. soldiers at Abu Gharaib prison in Iraq are indeed "terrible," the Pentagon's top civilian said today in testimony before a Senate subcommittee.

Contribute to Iraq Improvement Projects
    FALLUJAH, Iraq, May 12, 2004 — U.S. Marines and Coalition personnel are participating in numerous developmental projects in Iraqi cities in the Al Anbar Province, according to Combined Joint Task Force 7 officials. One of the projects involves the contracting of crews to clean up a main route through the center of Fallujah.
     Marines also began several large projects for Nassir Wa Al Salaam City. They include a communications center initiative worth $36,000, renovations to Al Faris School valued at $35,000, a women's clinic project worth $25,000, repairs to Jabhat Al Shaabe Primary School worth $8,000 and an excavation and backfill project valued at $7,000. More

Team Completes Al-Hather School
    BAGHDAD, Iraq, May 12, 2004 — An opening ceremony for the Al-Hather Secondary School in southern Baghdad took place May 7, marking the completion of United States-funded renovations to the school, according to Combined Joint Task Force 7 officials.
     The $57,500 renovation had been under way since late March, said 2nd Lt. Stephen Jaworski, Emergency Response Program coordinator for the 161st Infantry's 1st Battalion. The school will serve more than 700 students and have a staff of 30 teachers, Jaworski said.  More

Improvements on Tap for Fallujah, Al Kharma
    CAMP FALLUJAH, Iraq, May 12, 2004 — Marines will soon start the Fallujah Outreach Center Project designed to train and employ more than 80 young Iraqis in such trades as plumbing, electrical work and construction work, according to Combined Joint Task Force 7 officials.

'Wolfpack Crunch' Clears Insurgents
     DIWANIYA, Iraq, May 12, 2004 (Army News Service) — In the few weeks since the “Wolfpack” squadron of the 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment started patrolling the south-central Iraqi city of Diwaniya along the Euphrates, the soldiers have been hard at work scattering insurgent forces.

     WASHINGTON, May 12, 2004 — Defense Department officials announced today the death of a soldier who was supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom.
     Pfc. Andrew L. Tuazon, 21, of Chesapeake, Va., died May 10, in Mosul, Iraq, from hostile fire while on guard duty. Pfc. Tuazon was assigned to the Army’s 293rd Military Police Company, 3rd Military Police Battalion, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Stewart, Ga.
