The
last time I was in Iraq, I met with a delegation of graduate
students from Baghdad's best universities. Two hours
into the discussion, one student said something extraordinary
to me. He likened us to "doctors" and Iraq
to a "patient" who needed radical surgery: "You
[Americans] have started the operation. We are on the
operating table. You can't leave now. You've got to finish," he
pleaded. More |

CAMP
FALLUJAH, Iraq, May 7, 2004 — Marines put a new twist on
mending fences in a village near Fallujah.
About two weeks ago, an M-1A1 tank
was mired in mud in the small village of Al Budekil. Retriever
crews yanked the monstrous vehicle from a farm field, but tore
up valuable cropland in the process. A recent visit, though, not
only fixed the problems, but allowed Marines to gain the trust
of local Iraqis. More |

WASHINGTON, May 6, 2004 (Army News Service) — Last year Fort Stewart,
Ga., was being scrutinized for the way it housed mobilized soldiers.
This year, the installation won $1 million for swiftly modernizing
as a deployment platform. “The whole complexion of Fort Stewart is changing from
a World War II post to a modern deployment facility. Buildings
are sprouting up all over the post, and next year we will undertake
$136 million worth of construction,” said Col. John Kidd,
the garrison commander for Fort Stewart and Hunter Army Airfield
after being honored by the Army’s senior leadership. More |
