Coalition Encourages Growth

WASHINGTON,
Feb. 18, 2004 — While not precisely a "chicken-and-the-egg" analogy,
many in Iraq are asking which comes first, security or prosperity.
It's a bit of both, said Thomas Foley, director
of private sector development for the Coalition Provisional Authority.
"Security and prosperity are related," he
said during an interview today. "With prosperity, people have a stake in
the economy. There's a lot more pressure for people not to be disrupted."
A second point, he said, is that prosperous people have more money to invest in security. They can fund the law enforcement agencies and pay for the infrastructure that ensures the rule of law. More |

Reconstruction Teams Work
To Secure, Rebuild Afghanistan |

WASHINGTON,
Feb. 18, 2003 — Officials are happy with the progress of
11 provincial reconstruction teams in Afghanistan and are looking
to expand the program throughout the country.
Eleven teams are operating in Afghanistan, with a 12th becoming active this week. Coalition partners operate three of these teams. New Zealand and the United Kingdom each operate a team, while Germany runs one under the auspices of NATO, the top American general in Afghanistan said Feb. 17. More

JACKSONVILLE,
Fla., Feb. 18, 2004 — Things have come full circle for
the soldiers of 8th Battalion, 101st Aviation Regiment.
Just over a year ago at Jacksonville, they loaded
the helicopters of the "Screaming Eagle" 101st Airborne Division on
cargo vessels bound for Kuwait. This week, these same aircraft arrived back at
Jacksonville, and many of the same soldiers, now combat-hardened, were waiting

Imminent Danger
Pay,
Tax Relief Offered to Select Units |
WASHINGTON,
Feb. 18, 2004 (NNS) — Navy personnel who deployed
to the eastern Mediterranean Sea in the opening weeks of
Operation Iraqi Freedom are now entitled to Imminent Danger
Pay and Combat Zone Tax Relief benefits.
Through special legislation, the Defense Department retroactively authorized these benefits from March 19 through Aug. 1, 2003.
"We are absolutely delighted to be able to get this pay into the hands of all
those hard-working Sailors who were there during the opening phase of the war," said

Identify Army Casualty |
WASHINGTON,
Feb. 18, 2004 — Defense Department officials
announced today the identity of a soldier who died while
supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Spc. Christopher M. Taylor,
25, of Daphne, Ala., died Feb. 16 in Baghdad, Iraq, when
an improvised explosive device struck his convoy. Taylor
was assigned to the 1165th Military Police Company, Army
National Guard, Fairhope, Ala. His unit was attached to
the 18th Military Police Brigade operating in theater. |
