War on Terror Reinforces Need
For Dedicated Close-Air Support |

WASHINGTON,
Feb. 11, 2004 — U.S. military operations in Afghanistan confirm
the need for the dedicated close-air support for ground troops,
Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. John P. Jumper told the Senate
Armed Services Committee Feb. 10.
Jumper said the proposed fiscal year 2005 Defense
Department budget ensures that the Air Force can continue upgrading its close-air
support capabilities to maintain air superiority against threats. Story |

| Explosions rock Al Fathah Air Field in Iraq, as Army engineers and Air Force explosive ordnance disposal personnel detonate a weapons cache, Feb. 5, 2004. Residents Celebrate Rebuilding Efforts

BAGHDAD,
IRAQ, Feb. 12, 2004 — In the western
region of Abu Ghraib, the community has plenty
to celebrate. In less than two months, their
water is safer to drink, the condition of
the mosque is better, and residents now have
a medical clinic close at hand.
During a ribbon cutting ceremony the 414th Civil
Affairs Battalion, an Army Reserves unit based in Utica, N.Y., gathered with
the residents of a small community within the Abu Ghraib neighborhood district
to celebrate the completion of a medical clinic, the restoration of a mosque

Iraq (Army News Service, Feb. 9, 2004) – The
next step in building a stronger Iraqi army
began as the first officers graduated from
the Northern Iraq Regional Training Center
Platoon Leader’s Basic Course in Al
Qayyarah Feb. 9.
The ceremony marked the completion of two weeks of training
designed to provide the Iraqi military with strong leaders. Eleven officers of
various ranks received their graduation diploma as dignitaries looked on. More |

CURACAO,
Netherlands Antilles, Feb. 12, 2004 — The many
facets of the war on terror has carried Marines to
various parts of the planet, from Afghanistan to the
Philippines to the Horn of Africa. This year, it took
a group of reservists to the Caribbean island of Curacao,
where they trained to combat the gathering threat of
Narco-Terrorism.
Marines from Kilo Company, 3rd Battalion, 25th
Marine Regiment left their Marine Corps Reserve
Center in Moundsville, W.Va. to travel to Curacao
to train alongside their Royal Dutch Marine counterparts. More |

Officials Identify
Air Force Casualty |
WASHINGTON,
Feb. 11, 2004 — Defense Department officials announced
today the death of an airman who was supporting Operation Iraqi
Freedom.
Master Sgt. Jude C. Mariano,
39, of Vallejo, Calif., died Feb. 10 in Doha, Qatar. He died
from injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident. Mariano
was assigned to the 615th Air Mobility Operations Squadron,
Travis Air Force Base, Calif. The incident is under investigation. |

MARINE CORPS WASHINGTON — For the first time since the
2001 anthrax attacks, a team of the Marine Corps' Chemical
Biological Incident Response Force was called into action earlier
this month.
A 161-member team, headquartered at Indian Head,
Md., responded to a call from the capitol police, after a postal worker
at the Dirksen Senate Office Building found ricin in a mail
