Defense Leaders Urge Proper Funding to Face Terror Threats

     WASHINGTON, Feb. 12, 2004 - Acknowledging that the president's budget request for fiscal 2005 represents "an enormous amount of money," Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld told Congress today it funds investments that ensure the nation's ability to face future threats, including those posed by terrorists.
     Rumsfeld told the House Appropriations Committee the $401.7 billion budget request will cover operations and initiatives needed "because our nation is engaged in a struggle that could well go on for a number of years." More

Top U.S. Commanders Escape Injury in Iraq Convoy Attack

     WASHINGTON, Feb. 12, 2004 — The top military commander in Southwest Asia and the commander of the 82nd Airborne Division escaped injury today when their convoy was attacked while entering an Iraqi Civil Defense Corps battalion headquarters in Fallujah, Iraq.

     WILLIAMSBURG, Va., Feb. 12, 2004 (NNS) —Vice Adm. John G. Cotton, Commander, Naval Reserve Force, visited mobilized Naval Reservists at Naval Weapons Station Yorktown, Va., and Cheatham Annex, Va., prior to their February deployment for what the Pentagon has called the largest force rotation since World War II.
     The mobilized personnel were at Williamsburg for 30 days of pre-deployment training. The training included anti-terrorism, combat tactics, small arms, and improvised explosive device recognition - in addition to traditional port operations training.      WASHINGTON, Feb. 11, 2004 --— Defense Department officials announced today the death of an airman who was supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom.
     Master Sgt. Jude C. Mariano, 39, of Vallejo, Calif., died Feb. 10 in Doha, Qatar. He died from injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident. Mariano was assigned to the 615th Air Mobility Operations Squadron, Travis Air Force Base, Calif. The incident is under investigation.

     HEADQUARTERS MARINE CORPS WASHINGTON-- For the first time since the 2001 anthrax attacks, a team of the Marine Corps' Chemical Biological Incident Response Force was called into action earlier this month.
