MAZAR-E-SHARIF,
Afghanistan, Dec. 4, 2003 — The British Provisional Reconstruction
Team here is helping to bring the influence of the provisional
national government beyond the national capital of Kabul, Defense
Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld said here today during a visit.
"It is a way of having the efforts of the
transitional government and the Karzai administration felt and reflected outside
of the capital city, and that's a good thing," he said. More |

WASHINGTON,
Dec. 5, 2003 - The countdown began with "5," and four seconds
later the 40-foot blue spruce burst forth in with red, white
and green – Christmas at the White House had officially begun.
President Bush and wife, Laura,
greeted hundreds of children, their families and special guests on the White
House lawn in
chilly temperatures to watch the national Christmas tree-lighting
ceremony Dec. 4. The annual event first began in 1923 with the
nation's 30th president,
Calvin Coolidge.
Several service members from Operations Iraqi
Freedom and
Enduring Freedom were among those assembled. Many came from
nearby Walter Reed Army Medical Center, where they are
recovering from injuries suffered in Iraq and Afghanistan. More |

WASHINGTON,
Dec. 3, 2003 — Transforming the U.S. armed forces while
still fighting a global war on terrorism is the biggest challenge
facing military leaders today, Air Force Gen. Richard B. Myers
said today.
The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff spoke at the
Institute for Foreign Policy Analysis and U.S. Navy-sponsored Fletcher Conference
here. Myers said the war on terrorism is unlike any war the United States has
fought before, and this demands new thinking, new tactics and new capabilities. More |

BAKU, Azerbaijan,
Dec. 3, 2003 — Conveying President Bush's gratitude for Azerbaijan's
help in the global war on terror, Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld
arrived here today for meetings with the president and defense
minister of this former Soviet republic on the western shore of
the Caspian Sea.
Rumsfeld met with Defense Minister Col. Gen. Safar Abiyev and the two defense leaders then met with new Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev at the Presidential Apparat here. More |

77th Maintenance
Company
Returns from Operation Iraqi Freedom

BABENHAUSEN,
Germany — More than 100 soldiers from 77th Maintenance
Company, 3rd Corps Support Command, were welcomed
home here Nov. 26 after being deployed for eight
months in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Excited wives and children carrying signs, flowers
and American flags gathered on the sidewalk outside the Army Community Service
center on Babenhausen Kaserne to greet their loved ones.
With a military police escort, the soldiers marched
from their motor pool through the base to ACS. With the first glimpse of the
unit, family members broke out
in cheers and tears flowed. |

BAGHDAD, Iraq, Dec. 5, 2003 — The Iraqi children were shy, staring at the festive decorations adorning the walls of the dining room where the paratroopers awaited their arrival. Hesitant at first, the children’s timid faces began to smile.
The children, orphans from the southern village of Al Jebachy, came to Camp Falcon to celebrate the Islamic holiday Ramadan’s Feast of Eid Al-Fitr Nov. 26. More |

CAMP NAVISTAR, Kuwait, Dec. 3, 2003 — It was not a mission soldiers under the Montana National Guard’s 495th Transportation Battalion were used to doing; but in the end, all agreed they got quite a “kick” out of it.
In an effort to alleviate acts of mischief in the Iraqi border town of Safwan-located just a few miles from the 495th’s base at Camp Navistar in Kuwait-members of the unit passed out soccer balls, candy and clothes to youngsters in the community. More |

BAGHDAD, Iraq, Dec. 3, 2003 - Every day, as soldiers in Baghdad travel down the city streets, through neighborhoods and markets, they travel with weapons loaded, watching people, buildings and vehicles for the source of the next possible threat.
The job that many of these soldiers have taken on, however, is not simply defending themselves against insurgents, or even to find and apprehend those who pose a threat to Coalition forces. These soldiers have also made it their mission to improve life for the Iraqi people. More |
