Rumsfeld Praises Georgia for Assistance in War on Terror

     TBILISI, Georgia, Dec. 5, 2003 — With mounting concern in this former Soviet republic over Russia's behavior in the region and a new interim government still finding its feet, Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld toured a U.S.-sponsored military training facility and met with key leaders here today.
     In a joint press conference with acting president Nino Burdzhanadze, Rumsfeld said the United States agrees with Georgia that Russia needs to live up to its obligations under the so-called Istanbul Accords of 1999 to withdraw its forces from Georgia, except for a 2,500- to 3,000-member peacekeeping force in a troubled region of the country.
     Calling Georgia a "staunch friend of the West," Rumsfeld said the United States appreciates the country's help with Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan and Operation Iraqi Freedom. Story
Roadside Bomb Kills Coalition Soldier, Wounds Iraqi Citizens

     WASHINGTON Dec. 5, 2003 — One coalition soldier was killed and approximately 12 Iraqi citizens were wounded when a convoy was struck by a roadside bomb in Baghdad early this morning, a military spokesman said in a briefing today from the Iraqi city.
     In a separate incident in Baghdad another roadside bomb "slightly wounded" one coalition soldier, said Army Brig. Gen. Mark Kimmitt, deputy director of operations, Combined Joint Task Force 7. Also, a coalition logistics convoy was attacked with automatic weapons south of Samarra. Two civilian drivers were treated and released for injuries, he added. More  Briefing

     KABUL, Afghanistan, Dec. 4, 2003 — U.S. Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld today praised the "truly remarkable" progress Afghanistan's government has made in the two years since the country's liberation, and Afghan President Hamid Karzai said he expects his country's condition to continue improving in the months and years to come.

     KRTSANISI, Georgia, Dec. 5, 2003 — Marines and soldiers from Task Force Georgia Train and Equip Program were honored with a visit by the Secretary of Defense Friday, during his visit to the Caucasus region.

Identify Army Casualty
    WASHINGTON, Dec. 4, 2003 — Defense Department officials announced today the death of a soldier who was supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom.
     Chief Warrant Officer Clarence E. Boone, 50, of Fort Worth, Texas, died on Dec. 2 in Kuwait City, Kuwait. Boone died as a result of a non-combat related injury. Boone was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 4th Infantry Division, based in Fort Hood, Texas. The incident is under investigation.

     WASHINGTON, Dec. 5, 2003 - The countdown began with "5," and four seconds later the 40-foot blue spruce burst forth in with red, white and green – Christmas at the White House had officially begun.
      President Bush and wife, Laura, greeted hundreds of children, their families and special guests on the White House lawn in chilly temperatures to watch the national Christmas tree-lighting ceremony Dec. 4. The annual event first began in 1923 with the nation's 30th president, Calvin Coolidge.
      Several service members from Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom were among those assembled. Many came from nearby Walter Reed Army Medical Center, where they are recovering from injuries suffered in Iraq and Afghanistan. More
Myers: Transformation Vital to Fighting Global War On Terror

     WASHINGTON, Dec. 3, 2003 — Transforming the U.S. armed forces while still fighting a global war on terrorism is the biggest challenge facing military leaders today, Air Force Gen. Richard B. Myers said today.
     The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff spoke at the Institute for Foreign Policy Analysis and U.S. Navy-sponsored Fletcher Conference here. Returns from Operation Iraqi Freedom

Capt. Ben Lipari, commander of 77th Maintenance Company, and his wife, Melissa, cuddle their 8-month-old son Dominik during the 77th's Nov. 26 welcome home to Babenhausen (Germany) Kaserne. The captain and more than 100 members of the 77th deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom when Dominik was 12 days old.     BABENHAUSEN, Germany — More than 100 soldiers from 77th Maintenance Company, 3rd Corps Support Command, were welcomed home here Nov. 26 after being deployed for eight months in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
      Excited wives and children carrying signs, flowers and American flags gathered on the sidewalk outside the Army Community Service center on Babenhausen Kaserne to greet their loved ones.
      With a military police escort, the soldiers marched from their motor pool through the base to ACS. With the first glimpse of the unit, family members broke out in cheers and tears flowed. More

     CAMP NAVISTAR, Kuwait, Dec. 3, 2003 — It was not a mission soldiers under the Montana National Guard’s 495th Transportation Battalion were used to doing; but in the end, all agreed they got quite a “kick” out of it.
     In an effort to alleviate acts of mischief in the Iraqi border town of Safwan-located just a few miles from the 495th’s base at Camp Navistar in Kuwait-members of the unit passed out soccer balls, candy and clothes to youngsters in the community. More

     The job that many of these soldiers have taken on, however, is not simply defending themselves against insurgents, or even to find and apprehend those who pose a threat to Coalition forces. These soldiers have also made it their mission to improve life for the Iraqi people. More
