Bush Talks NATO Summit;
Says Iraq Poses 'Unique' Threat |

WASHINGTON, Oct. 21, 2002 — U.S. President George W. Bush and NATO Secretary-General
Lord George Robertson met today to discuss next month's NATO summit,
which Robertson said will be the most important in the alliance's
history.
"NATO is an incredibly important part of U.S. foreign policy," Bush
said following their meeting in the Oval Office. "I appreciate the
alliance." Bush said he and Robertson talked about NATO expansion and a
brief the secretary-general will receive in a few weeks on U.S. views.
Robertson said Bush has shown "his and his administration's commitment
to NATO and to the strength of this trans-Atlantic alliance that has
bound together these democratic and freedom-loving states over all of

Oct. 21, 2002 — American concerns about Iraq and North
Korea are "quite different" and will be dealt with
individually, two senior Bush administration officials said
Oct. 20. Officials announced
last week that North Korea has admitted to developing nuclear
weapons, a direct violation of at least four international agreements

| Women’s Hospital Project - Coalition Joint Task Force-180 has approved a new national impact project, Rabia Balkhi Women’s Hospital in Kabul. The project will repair the building’s water and sewer systems, install heating and air conditioning, construct a patient waiting area, drill a well and construct a generator shelter. The generator was donated by the Japan International Cooperation Agency, a non-governmental organization. The hospital has 300 beds and employs 500 Afghans.

| Team Rebuilds Schools - In the past week, Civil Affairs Team Mazar-e-Sharif began repairs on five Coalition Joint Task Force-180 approved education projects in Mazar e-Sharif. These projects will benefit over 7,800 students, including 1,500 girls. Four projects will rebuild and refurbish facilities, and one will improve student safety. These projects are estimated to cost $147,000.

Army Reservist Helps
Document Military Life |
WASHINGTON, Oct. 21, 2002 — For the past several weeks,
Army Staff Sgt. Gary Kieffer has had his work cut out for
him. The 14-year veteran military photojournalist is
working as an assignment editor for a 24-hour, global photo
shoot by about 25 military and 100 civilian world-class
photographers.
Kieffer, a reservist currently serving on active duty at
U.S. European Command in Stuttgart, Germany, is working
with HarperCollins publishing company's project team on a
book titled "A Day in the Life of the United States Armed
Forces." More |
