Coalition Aircraft Strike
Iraqi Air Defense Site
American Forces Press Service
WASHINGTON, Oct. 15, 2002 — Coalition aircraft hit a command and control center near al Kut Oct. 15 in retaliation for Iraqi actions.
U.S. Central Command officials said the Iraqs fired surface-to-air missiles and anti-aircraft artillery at the coalition planes. Coalition aircraft dropped precision- guided munitions on the control center at 6:15 a.m. EDT.
This is the second time this month that aircraft patrolling the Southern No-fly Zone have attacked al Kut, which is about 100 miles southeast of the Iraqi capital of Baghdad. On Oct. 1, U.S. aircraft bombed a mobile radar operating in the area.
It is the sixth strike this month in the Southern area. There was one strike in the Northern No-fly Zone.

U.S. Aids Afghan People in 'New Era of Hope'
By Jim Garamone / American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, Oct. 11, 2002 — U.S. President George W. Bush stressed U.S. accomplishments in providing humanitarian aid to Afghanistan during a White House ceremony Oct. 11.
Bush said the United States wants to be a participant in "the new era of hope" for Afghanistan, and said that America is making good on its pledges to the country.
The president detailed the aid America has delivered to Afghanistan. He said the basis behind this aid is America's notion that "everybody counts, everybody has worth, everybody matters."
U.S. military personnel have played an important role in the humanitarian efforts. "Our soldiers wear the uniforms of warriors, but they're also compassionate people," he said. "And the Afghan people are really beginning to see the true strength of our country. … Routing out the Taliban was important, but building a school is equally important." More

Security Strategy Based
On American Values
WASHINGTON — The nation's new national security strategy are based upon the values of America -- "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. The new strategy says human dignity is "nonnegotiable," and that its integral elements include the rule of law, limits on state power, free speech, freedom of religion, respect for women, ethnic and national tolerance and respect for private property. Changing threats mean changing responses, and defense and White House officials have termed the document the most radical reshaping of the strategy since the end of the Cold War.                                   Story

Life Support Shop
Vital to AF Missions
OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM (AFPN)  —  The people in the 777th Expeditionary Airlift  Squadron life support shop work hard to  maintain their equipment, but they'll be content if  customers never have the chance to use most  of it. That's because most of the equipment  they  maintain, including body armor, global  positioning  system instruments, life support  vests, flares,  parachutes and life rafts, would  only be used  in "worst-case scenarios," such  as a crash at  sea or in hostile territory.
