U.S. Aids Afghan People
In Their 'New Era of Hope' |
| By Jim Garamone / American Forces
Press Service |
WASHINGTON, Oct. 11, 2002 — U.S. President George W. Bush stressed U.S.
accomplishments in providing humanitarian aid to
Afghanistan during a White House ceremony Oct. 11.
Bush said the United States wants to be a participant in
"the new era of hope" for Afghanistan, and said that
America is making good on its pledges to the country.
The president detailed the aid America has delivered to
Afghanistan. He said the basis behind this aid is America's
notion that "everybody counts, everybody has worth,
everybody matters."
U.S. military personnel have played an important role in
the humanitarian efforts. "Our soldiers wear the uniforms
of warriors, but they're also compassionate people," he
said. "And the Afghan people are really beginning to see
the true strength of our country. … Routing out the Taliban
was important, but building a school is equally important." More |

| Day Five |
| We
have been practicing our insertion techniques lately.
Today we had practical application classes on SPIE (Special
Purpose Insertion/Extraction system) rigging. Like I mentioned
in a previous e-mail, during SPIE rigging we securely
attach to a rope hanging from the bottom of a helicopter
and hang from it as the helicopter flies. So today we
practiced attaching our safety line and chest harness
around our bodies, then connecting them to the SPIE rig
line. This is where knot tying becomes critical and important.
Everyone checks each other to make sure we have the correct
knots tied. More |

U.S. Army Helps

Child’s Wish Come True |
FORT BELVOIR, Va.
— Walt Disney eat your heart out. The
Army can help make dreams come true, too.
Elements of Fort Belvoir recently teamed up with the Make-A-Wish
Foundation of the Mid-Atlantic to help make a terminally
ill 10-year-old’s wishes come true.
Justin Bryce’s doctors believe he has just a few
weeks left before the disease that threatens his life
wins. Bryce told the Make-A-Wish Foundation that his desire
before dying was to be a soldier — a real soldier.
