SECRETARY RUMSFELD
Afghan Progress Remarkable
By Jim Garamone / American Forces Press Service
WASHINGTON, Oct. 7, 2002 — A year after the beginning of combat operations against the Taliban and al Qaeda in Afghanistan, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said the achievements of coalition forces has been remarkable.
Rumsfeld said during an Oct. 7 Pentagon news conference that the United States has put together a coalition of more than 90 nations against the terror threat. He said it is the largest military coalition ever assembled.
"As we stated last Oct. 7, … U.S. military objectives in Afghanistan were to drive the Taliban from power, to capture, kill or disrupt al Qaeda, to provide humanitarian relief to the Afghan people and begin the process of creating conditions that will eventually make Afghanistan inhospitable to terrorist networks," he said. By Air Force Staff Sgt. Sonny Cohrs / 6th Air Mobility Wing Public Affairs

MACDILL AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. — More than 500 servicemembers gathered here Oct. 7, to mark the one-year anniversary of the beginning of military operations in response to the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.
Army Gen. Tommy Franks, commander in chief of U.S. Central Command, offered his thanks and admiration for the men and women of the U.S. Armed Forces, the 42 nations represented in CENTCOM’s coalition forces, and the American people.
Franks said America is in debt to those who have joined to stand in the face of evil and guarantee a future for the civilized world. Together, these forces will “stand in the face of terror with resolve and commitment, representing the will of the nation and the will of our people,” he said. More

Day Two
Today I e-mailed my wife. We e-mail each other daily, and I try calling her on the weekends. She keeps herself busy while I’m gone. She’s currently working two jobs, and is part of a key volunteer network that helps other Marine wives during deployment by passing information and helping with any problems if needed. It’s also great that she keeps both of our families informed of what and how I’m doing. The greatest thing is how she is proud of me being in the military, and how much of a moral support she is for me. More
