FLIGHT DECK — Bathed in the glow of the flight deck lights aboard the USS George Washington, aviation ordnancemen stage weapons in preparation for loading onto aircraft for a night launch. | WAR ON TERROR |
America's Top General Warns,
'We Can't Rest On Our Success' |
| By Gerry J. Gilmore / American Forces Press Service |
WASHINGTON, Sept. 13, 2002 — While America and its allies have achieved many goals thus far in the war against global terrorism, it's not time to rest on laurels, the U.S. military's senior officer said here Friday.
Air Force Gen. Richard B. Myers, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told reporters at the National Press Club that U.S. and coalition forces have helped remove a hostile regime from power in Afghanistan while eliminating a major terrorist safe haven.
"We did this with the least collateral damage and loss of innocent life than any comparable operation in history," Myers pointed out. "Clearly," he added, "This was a major military victory."
Consequently, Afghanistan today is "a radically different country from a year ago," the general noted. The Afghans have installed a new, democratic, national government. Two million Afghan refugees have returned to their country, he said. Three million Afghan girls and boys have returned to school, he added, noting the students have access to more than 10 million textbooks. More |

| DES MOINES, Iowa — As a U.S. Army lieutenant read the oath of enlistment, 17-year-old Garry Tinsley III of Des Moines raised his right hand and swore to "support and defend the Constitution of the United States, against all enemies foreign and domestic. At the new soldier's side stood his proud father - with his right hand raised, and repeating the oath of enlistment. So began - and began anew - the military careers of Spc. Garry Tinsley, Jr., and Pvt. Garry Tinsley III, U.S. Army Reserve. Story

Mass Weapons Threat Real;
Iraq not Only Concern |
| WASHINGTON — While Iraq's weapons of mass destruction program poses the most immediate danger, other countries are also of concern, a senior defense official said Friday. Iran, North Korea, Syria, Libya, Sudan and Cuba have active WMD programs, said the official. But what is of more concern is the nexus between such states and terrorist organizations. Story
