Rumsfeld Warns NATO Allies
to Prepare WMD Defenses
By Sgt. 1st Class Kathleen T. Rhem, USA / American Forces Press Service
   BRUSSELS, Belgium, June 6, 2002 — There is little or no warning of an attack in today's world, and a weapon of mass destruction attack would bring catastrophic consequences, according to U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld.
   "If we do not prepare promptly to counter (the WMD threat), we could well experience attacks in our countries that could make the attacks of Sept. 11 seem modest by comparison," the secretary said Wednesday during a press conference at NATO headquarters.
   Defense against weapons of mass destruction and a review of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization command structure topped the docket here Thursday during meetings of defense leaders from NATO's 19 countries.
   Rumsfeld told the ministers that pre-emptive strikes should be considered self-defense. Nations' militaries historically have prepared to "contest aggressive, hostile armies, navies and air forces," he said. But terrorists don't fight a country's militaries — they target civilian populations using any means at hand. Story

Operation Mountain Lion Continues;
Joint Task Force Assumes Control
By Jim Garamone / American Forces Press Service
   WASHINGTON, June 6, 2002 — Operation Mountain Lion continues in the mountains of southeastern Afghanistan, said Defense Department officials.
   U.S. troops and coalition allies are searching caves and tunnels once used by al Qaeda and Taliban forces. While they are not finding much, U.S. Central Command officials said the searches are necessary.
   "We don't want al Qaeda reoccupying these caves," Navy Lt. Cmdr. Matthew Klee, a command spokesman said. "We're doing this for deterrence purposes and also to make sure we didn't miss anything."
   On May 31, Combined Joint Task Force-180 assumed control of operations in Afghanistan. Army Lt. Gen. Dan K. McNeill is the commander and reports directly to Central Command chief Army Gen. Tommy Franks. Story

U.S. Must Encourage
Moderate Muslim States
   Indonesia's long tradition of religious tolerance is "something not to be taken for granted anywhere in the world and, particularly after Sept. 11, not something to be taken for granted in the Muslim world," U.S. Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz said Wednesday at the Hoover Institute Symposium in Washington.
