Rumsfeld: World Must Oppose
Terrorism 'Wherever it Exists'
By Linda D. Kozaryn / American Forces Press Service
WASHINGTON — "Terrorism must be vigorously opposed and soundly defeated wherever it exists," U.S. Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld said at the Pentagon Friday.
Whether it's in America, Afghanistan, Europe, Asia or the Middle East, "we have to end state sponsorship and support of terrorism," he said. "We have to prevent authors of mass murder ... from gaining and using weapons of mass destruction."
The war on terrorism is not America's war "only" —- it is not just America's problem, Rumsfeld stressed. "Terrorism has existed for decades as low intensity conflict," he said. "Its rise in recent years, its frequency, its intensity and its scope, as well as its use by terrorist networks with global reach" makes it a problem for civilized nations everywhere.
The United States, he said, must be prepared to help other countries stand strong against terrorism. That's why the U.S. military is now in Afghanistan tracking down Al Qaeda and Taliban forces. That is also why U.S. forces are helping to counter terrorism in Yemen, the Republic of Georgia and the Philippines.
"It's why we oppose nations like those harboring and helping terrorists," Rumsfeld said, "and it's why we continue to seek and appreciate the support of every nation that's willing to join us in this important effort."
Currently, 68 nations are supporting the global war on terrorism. Twenty nations have deployed more than 16,000 troops to U.S. Central Command's area of responsibility. Coalition partners make up more than half the non-Afghan forces working with U.S. forces in Afghanistan. More

Cheney: U.S. Will Not Allow
Terrorists to Threaten World
By Jim Garamone / American Forces Press Service
U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney said the United States "will not allow" terrorists to threaten the civilized world.
"Deliverable weapons of mass destruction in the hands of terrorists would expose this nation and the civilized world to the worst of wars, and we will not allow it," he said during Commissioning Day ceremonies Friday at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. "We will not live at the mercy of terrorists or terror regimes."
Cheney told the 965 new Navy and Marine Corps officers in the class of 2002 that the U.S. would depend on them to help lead the nation in the first war of the 21st century. He said the war against global terror will take years. "The terrorists who struck America are ruthless, they are resourceful and they hide in many countries," Cheney said. "They came into our country to murder thousands of innocent, unsuspecting men, women and children — including 14 graduates of this academy.
"There is no doubt they wish to strike again and are working to acquire the deadliest of all weapons."
Cheney said this new type of war has accelerated military changes already being contemplated. More

U.S. Seeks to Lessen World Tensions
Even while the United States combats global terrorism, the nation must also work with other nations to enhance security and stability, U.S. Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld said Friday.
The U.S. and India, for example, share important interests in combating terrorism and in countering the spread of missiles and weapons of mass destruction, the secretary said. More

Battle of Takur Ghar:
A Story of Courage
The battle on an Afghan mountaintop called Takur Ghar is a story of American courage and bravery. It's a story of a small band of trained professionals overcoming the fog of war. It is also, at heart, a story of American service members’ unwillingness to leave one of their own behind.  Account    Overview

Blue Star mother
The Blue Star Mothers was founded 60 years ago to show support for the military during World War II. Jean Campbell decided to set up her own chapter when her son was deployed to the Middle East. But, she says, "the more involved in it I become, the more I'm doing it for all the sons and daughters. I want them to know that we're proud of them." Story

Bagram School Refurbishment - Coalition Joint Civil Military Operations Task Force (CJCMOTF) - Bagram delivered school supplies, tents and lumber as part of the Parwan Schools Project north of Kabul. Desks, windows and doors are being made from excess lumber from project "Home Depot". Four schools serving more than 3,000 students will benefit from this project, which is 50% complete.
Six Bamian School Projects Are Underway - CJCMOTF has begun six "quick impact" school projects in the Bamian province that will benefit more than 1,687 students. These projects will provide the schools with stoves, desks, chairs, carpets and blackboards using $21,164 in Overseas Humanitarian, Disaster and Civic Aid funding. The projects complement the effort of People in Need Foundation, a non-governmental organization which recently completed structural repairs on the schools.
