President Thanks Germany
For Support Against Terror
U.S. President George W. Bush told the German Bundestag on Thursday: "NATO's defining purpose — our collective defense — is as urgent as ever. America and Europe need each other to fight and win the war against global terror. My nation is so grateful for the sympathy of the German people, and for the strong support of Germany and all of Europe." Speech

Cheney Warns Public to be
Vigilant, Heed Threat Alerts
By Linda D. Kozaryn / American Forces Press Service
WASHINGTON, May 23, 2002 — Be vigilant. Heed security alerts, U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney warned the American public Wednesday night.
It's "just a matter of time" before terrorists strike the United States again, he said in an interview on CNN TV. "This is not a normal peacetime kind of situation."
Even though U.S. authorities have received no specific threat, Cheney said, the nation must "ratchet up" the security level. "It's not the kind of thing where somebody came in and said, 'Hey, the Brooklyn Bridge is going to get hit tomorrow.' It's never that detailed. It's more a matter of being concerned that there has been some planning activity in the past by the (terrorist) organization." More

Rumsfeld: Terrorists ‘Wouldn’t Hesitate’
To Use Weapons of Mass Destruction
Over the last few days, U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney, FBI Director Robert Mueller, Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld and New York City authorities have warned that terrorists will most likely strike again.
"What's going on? Are all these things part of a pattern?" TV reporter Jim Lehrer asked Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld Wednesday night on the PBS television program NewsHour.
"There is no pattern," Rumsfeld replied. "It's just the truth."
The truth, the defense secretary stressed, is that there are hundreds of trained terrorists around the world. "They have money," he said. "They are skillful at what they do, as we saw on Sept. 11."
For months, Rumsfeld said, he's been warning Americans that such countries as Iraq, Iran, Syria, Libya and North Korea sponsor terrorism and that these nations have chemical and biological weapons programs. Some of them also have aggressive programs to develop nuclear weapons. More

International Anti-Terror
Coalition Still Growing
The international coalition against terrorism remains strong as more countries join the coalition and more countries are providing more assets.
The U.S. Defense Department released a list of 37 countries this week and the aid they are providing to the war on terrorism. The scope of coalition support is evident in Afghanistan. More than half the 14,000 anti-terror troops in the country come from coalition countries. Story

Construction at Karabach High School - Civil Affairs Team (Bagram): Work began on renovating Karabach High School, a Humanitarian Assistance-funded project in the village of Karabach, south of Bagram Airfield. The school supports approximately 750 children in the area and upon completion will relieve the overcrowding at the nearby middle school that currently supports these students. The contractor has removed the roof and rubble from the interior and will begin renovation of the building to include new windows and doors, grading of the courtyard, latrine repair, some structural repairs and interior and exterior painting. As part of the rehabilitation effort, funds are also provided to procure desks, chairs and chalkboards for the classrooms.
Work on Sultan Rasia Girls School - Civil Affairs Team (Mazar-e-Sharif): Sultan Rasia Girls School main building reconstruction continues. Several walls of the building are being replaced. Additionally, two modular classrooms have been installed on concrete platforms. Classrooms should become operational upon completion of utility connections.
