Search for Terrorists Continues
As British Operation Snipe Ends
By Jim Garamone / American Forces Press Service
WASHINGTON, May 13, 2002 — The British-led Operation Snipe is over, but other operations designed to root out Al Qaeda and Taliban forces in Afghanistan continue, U.S. Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld said Monday.
"Operation Snipe was one additional sweep that took place. There are others that are going on and will be going on," he said. "It was helpful, and we appreciate the work the coalition did."
The sweep through portions of eastern Afghanistan uncovered caches of weapons. Coalition troops also captured a number of Al Qaeda and Taliban members on Sunday. Rumsfeld said the sweeps must continue "if we're to be successful." More

Rumsfeld Favors Ties With Indonesia
By Jim Garamone / American Forces Press Service
WASHINGTON, May 13, 2002 — It's time for the U.S. military to engage with its Indonesian counterpart, U.S. Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld said Monday.
After meeting with Indonesian Defense Minister Matori Abdul Dajalil at the Pentagon, Rumsfeld said the two discussed the problems of terrorism in the world and the work that Indonesia is doing to deal with the problem. "We also had a good discussion on the relationship between our two countries," Rumsfeld said.
The secretary said the Bush administration is working with Congress to re-establish military-to-military ties between the nations. "We're hopeful we might find support in the Congress to move in the correct direction," Rumsfeld said. Military-to-military ties between the United States and Indonesia ended over concern about human rights abuses on the island of East Timor.
Indonesia is the largest Muslim nation in the world, and it is struggling to maintain its secular democratic government. More

Volunteers for 'Hot Zone'
Story.
Some people join the military because they relish a challenge. Others love to learn. Still others want to serve their country. The members of the Ohio National Guard's Weapons of Mass Destruction Civil Support team could answer "All of the above" if asked why they volunteered for their dangerous jobs. Story

Bread-Making Operations - Coalition Humanitarian Liaison Cell-Herat provided maintenance support for generators used by War Child, a non-governmental organization, so that it could continue its bread-making operations in the Shaidayee internally displaced persons (IDP) camp in Herat. The wheat supplied by World Food Program enables War Child to produce 50,000 loaves of bread a day, providing fresh bread for the entire IDP camp population of 23,000.
Afghan Road Reconstruction - Coalition Humanitarian Liaison Cell Mazar-e-Sharif met with the United Nations Joint Logistics Center Road Task Force and several non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to coordinate road reconstruction efforts as part of an Afghan Assistance Coordinating Authority work group initiative. At the meeting, roads critical to the delivery of humanitarian assistance were identified as the highest reconstruction priority. Repairing key routes will reduce costs and transport times for NGOs and coalition forces providing humanitarian assistance to the people of Afghanistan.
