U.S. Forces Find Arms
Cache;
Three Rockets Fired Near Khost |
| By Sgt. 1st Class Kathleen T.
Rhem, USA / American Forces Press Service |
WASHINGTON,
May 6, 2002 U.S., coalition and friendly Afghan forces
found and confiscated a cache of weapons in eastern Afghanistan
over the weekend, defense officials said.
Fewer than 100 U.S. troops are operating with
British forces as part of Operation Snipe, an ongoing mission
to root out suspected Taliban and al Qaeda holdouts believed
to be hiding in areas along the Pakistani border.
Marine Lt. Col. Dave Lapan, a Pentagon spokesman,
said the confiscated weapons included rockets, mortars and machine
gun ammunition.
Early Monday morning Afghan time, three rockets
were fired near U.S. and coalition forces operating in the vicinity
of Khost, also in eastern Afghanistan. The incident occurred
at about 2 a.m. Afghan time, or 5:30 p.m. EDT May 5.
Lapan said U.S. officials don't know who fired
the rockets or where they came from, but they are looking into
the incident. No injuries or damage were reported, he said.

U.S. Must Win 'War of
Ideas,'
Encourage Moderate Muslims |
| By Jim Garamone / American Forces
Press Service |
The
United States is fighting back against extremists who are attempting
to hijack a religion for their own purposes, Deputy Defense
Secretary Paul Wolfowitz said in Monterey, Calif., this weekend.
It is not enough to defeat terrorists, he told members of the
World Affairs Council. The United States and the West must win
a larger war of ideas.
"This fight must be fought by all who aspire
to peace and freedom throughout the world for that aspiration
is what the terrorists wanted to destroy," Wolfowitz said. "And
this fight must be fought most emphatically in the Muslim world
itself, and by Muslims." The West must encourage moderate Muslims
who believe in a vision of Islam that embraces free thought,
free speech and tolerance, he said. Story |

| Kandahar Warehouse Doubles
Capacity - Coalition Humanitarian Liaison Cell
Kandahar is upgrading the government provisions
warehouse in Kandahar City. This is the second provincial
warehouse the first was in Konduz area
that will be used to store Humanitarian Assistance
food supplies for the World Food Program's Food
for Work projects. The projects support community
building and local government empowerment efforts.
Repairs to this warehouse, funded by Overseas Humanitarian
Disaster Assistance and Civic Aid, include doubling
the storage capacity of the site to 8,000 metric
tons, upgrading the warehouse floor to support vehicular
traffic, replacing the roof and refurbishing doors
and windows. |
| Rural Areas of Kandahar Receive
Aid - Coalition Joint Civil Military Operations
Task Force Kandahar has identified new, deep well
locations for eight rural villages in southern Kandahar
Province, one of the most severely drought-affected
areas in the country. To improve water services
in these rural areas, the task force is allocating
$133,000 of Overseas Humanitarian Disaster Assistance
and Civic Aid program funds to drill and refurbish
thirty wells, benefiting 14,000 Afghans in the province.
Most existing wells in the area are dry, due to
long periods of drought, or cannot be used for consumption
due to high levels of saline. The new wells, centrally
located in the villages, will provide a minimum
level of self-sustainment and self-reliance for
the village populations. |
